Straightening H-Beam – OASIS.AI used in Optimizing Manufacturing process
In a recent project conducted by Dr. Y-M Hwang and his team at NSYSU (Taiwan) used OASIS.AI in optimizing the roller plunge schedule in a H-Beam straightening design. H-Beam is widely used in construction, transportation and manufacturing industries. They are usually manufactured from steel or aluminum via rolling or extrusion. After the fabrication process, a straightening process with multiple rollers is typically needed to reduce residual stresses and curvatures in the end product.
The methodology development in this project included 3 parts - finite element modeling, roller plunge schedule (i.e., how much a roller is pressing down in terms of ratio of the radii) optimization, and experimental validation. OASIS.AI was used to explore the range of roller plunger ratios of 3 movable rollers (out of 7, others are stationary) that meets the requirement of residue stress level and a number of dimensions measures.
💡 The result?
✅ An optimized roller system design that produces straighter and durable H-beam
✅ Reduce/eliminate costly past trial-and error process in terms or time, material and labor cost.
Their work demonstrates that AI-driven optimization tools like OASIS.AI can deliver real, measurable improvements in manufacturing quality and efficiency. Such application could further support Industry 4.0 principles by laying the groundwork for automated, smart manufacturing with real-time adaptive control.
If you are working on metal forming, structural simulation, or smart factory solutions, optimization is no longer optional — it's a competitive advantage.
