π Boosting Krain Compressor Impeller Performance with OASIS.βAI - A Recent Success
We are delighted to share another success by one of our customers. In one of their recent projects, OASIS.βAI was used to optimize the well-known Krain centrifugal compressor impeller, and the following results were achieved in just 72 hours on a standard PC:
β
+1.2% point increase in isentropic efficiency (84.4% to 85.6%)
β
+1.4% increase in pressure ratio (4.95 to 5.02)
β
-0.7% reduction in power consumption
β
20% reduction in maximum stress (2,360MPa to 1,833MPa) significantly improving structural durability
There were 22 design variables including a discrete variable: the number of blades. The AI-driven optimization targeted flow path geometries and blade angles, using 3D CFD simulations and advanced constraint handling to boost performance and ensure manufacturability. Inlet and outlet widths were fine-tuned, hub and shroud profiles reshaped, and blade angles reworked to optimize aerodynamic performance.
What makes this study unique is not just the measurable performance gains, but the fact that the optimization was completed rapidly, using only standard computing resources.
Optimization techniques have been used in the turbomachinery industry for over 30 years. They have repeatedly delivered substantial gains in efficiency, durability, and energy saving, but they can be difficult to implement. With the advent of OASIS.βAI, we have made design exploration and optimization easy, robust, and reliable. With the increasing need for energy-efficient and cost-effective designs, intelligent optimization is set to become a cornerstone of modern engineering workflows.
